Serve Our Church
The Board of Deacons has the privilege of working with the minister to support the spiritual life of the church. We oversee all parts of the worship service and arrange for liturgists, maintain the rotation schedule of ushers, prepare and serve monthly communion, provide a Deacon on Call each Sunday to oversee the comfort and needs of each member of the congregation, and organize and coordinate special services as the needs of the church dictate. We arrange for pulpit supply ministers when needed. Additionally, two subcommittees report to Deacons: the Music Committee and the Memory Garden committee.
The Outreach Committee is responsible for distributing funds from Heavenly Threads proceeds to area nonprofits. We request budget expenditures to Our Church’s Wider Mission and World & Nation charitable organizations. We also coordinate One Great Hour of Sharing, Thanksgiving food drive and dinner, and our Christmas Dove Tree.
The Christian Education Committee facilitates safe, friendly, informative, engaging Christian education programs from nursery to high school. We oversee Sunday school, assist with youth group, mission trips and help with confirmation class. There is learning for all ages at our church!
The Board of Trustees is responsible for financial oversight, management and maintenance of all physical property and business operations of the church. To do so, we have three active subcommittees:
- The Building and Grounds Committee is responsible to the Board of Trustees for assessing current and long range physical and operational needs of the church, for prioritizing those needs and for getting bids for work to be done. We are responsible for implementing current contracts for daily operations and overseeing approved structural projects. In coordination with the other committees, we will work to integrate all of the physical and operational priorities into the budgeting process.
- The Finance Committee is responsible to the Board of Trustees for creating policies and procedures concerning the financial management of the church, overseeing the investment of the endowment and unrestricted funds, and for reviewing the current and long range budgeting for the church through in-depth planning based on historical content and current trends and future projections. In coordination with the other committees, we will work to integrate the financial priorities into the budgeting process.
- The Stewardship Committee is responsible to the Board of Trustees to coordinate the ongoing stewardship appeals to help generate pledging for the support of the church budget, to promote long range planned giving, and to create an atmosphere linking the importance of financial stewardship to the spiritual missions of the church. In coordination with the other committees, we will help to establish the current yearly budget based on its assessment of projected giving.
The Membership Committee welcomes visitors and new members, helps new members feel part of the congregation, and supports our existing membership. We arrange for new members to join the church a few times a year.
The Care Team is primarily a group of trained lay care visitors under the regular supervision of the minister who reach out to members and friends in need. Their ministry includes visits to shut-ins, people in nursing facilities, hospitals and rehab settings. Members of the care team also coordinate meals and rides, drawing on additional volunteers.
The Music Committee is a subcommittee of Deacons. Our mission is to work with the music director, the minister and the Deacons and Cabinet to make sure that our church offers creative music programs that aid worship and offer inspiration to church members and the community at large with the Friends of Music free concerts. We provide congregational input to the music ministry of the church.
The Nominating Committee prepares the slate of church officers, committee members, and official delegates to the Association and State Conference, all of whom are elected at the church’s Annual Meeting.
The Communications Committee works to foster communications within the church and with the community by promoting ways to inform members and friends of the church and the wider community of the activities of the church: who we are, what we do, and what we stand for. We are also responsible for overseeing the ongoing maintenance and upgrading of the church website.
The Personnel Committee oversees staff relations including, but not limited to, issues concerning hiring, job descriptions, salaries, fringe benefits, vacations, periodic job evaluations, grievances, and dismissals.
Delegates participate in the wider church activities of the United Church of Christ. This includes the shared work of our Midcoast Association within the Maine Conference and the national UCC, headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio. We report to the membership the actions, deliberations, and matters of interest of our wider church.
The Prayer Chain is a large group of volunteers who hold individuals in prayer as requested. We communicate through email on a strictly confidential basis.
Higher Ground is the ministry that offers coffee, food and fellowship following each Sunday morning service. Our teams rotate, and enjoy the opportunity to work with and serve our fellow worshippers every three months.
