There is a vibrant gathering of children every Sunday at our church.
A Talk with the Children takes place early in the service each week after which the kids head out to join a number of groups.
Our younger kids are welcome to join in our church school classrooms. Classrooms are multi-age and explore our Christianity through Bible reference and creative play and projects. Our teachers are a very creative group with a great commitment to their faith and our children.
Youth Group is for our middle and high school kids. Along with exploring our faith and its place in our lives and the world, we work on a number of service projects. Currently we are continuing to collect bottles to support a high school student in Lesotho, Africa. We also volunteer with local organizations, visit with seniors at Quarry Hill and take a service trip every 2-3 years. Our next trip is in April of 2016, when we will travel to Guatemala to work with the children and staff at Safe Passage.
For those children under 3 we have a nursery. Parents are welcome to have their children with them in the service or to bring their children to the nursery prior to the start of church or at any time during the service. There are a variety of toys, books and a very caring volunteer to care for your child.
Youth Group Service Trip to Safe Passage, Guatemala City, Guatemala
Six of our youth group students traveled to Safe Passage in Guatemala for a week in April, 2016 in order to assist with Safe Passage programs at the edge of the Guatemala City garbage dump. By the student's own accounts, it was a life changing experience.
As their website explains: "Safe Passage empowers the poorest at-risk children, whose families live in the Guatemala City garbage dump community, by creating opportunities and fostering dignity through the power of education. Safe Passage is a US-registered 501(c)(3) organization. Within a safe and caring environment, the organization provides hundreds of children with a comprehensive and integrated program that fosters hope, good health, educational achievement, self-sufficiency, self-esteem and confidence.” (www.safepassage.org)
Youth Group Sponsors Lesotho Student
The youth group has sponsored a student at Qholaqhoe High School in rural Lesotho, southern Africa for six years. Their first student, Motselisi, graduated in December 2016 with national test scores within the top 10% in the country. She is now enrolled in a college level accounting program.
This year the youth group is supporting a new student, Lipuo Thabo, who is in Form A, just beginning her high school experience.
Motselisi and Lipuo have been able to attend high school because of the efforts of the Youth Group to raise $250 every year to cover tuition and exam fees. Bottle collection accounts for a significant part of the fundraising. Letters are written back and forth as a way to keep in touch with each other.
